Castles are made of stone that is cut into blocks. A castle is also built out of wood. It takes a whole forest to build only half of a castle. A castle costs over ten thousand dollars. At the beginning the castles were very simple but later they were built better because they needed more protection from enemies and animals.
They built a wall or a moat around the castle for protection. Between the castle and the moat there was a space called the bailey. Moats were crossed with drawbridges that could be pulled up with chains or ropes. The keep of the castles was built with stones. The stones that were used were brought in wagons pulled by horses. The stones were from a quarry near by. Mortar was used to hold the stones together. The mortar was made from sand, lime and water mixed together.
It took a lot of men to build a castle. Cranes and pulleys were used to lift the blocks up high.
